Volunteer Guide
⌛ Arrival Time
Early mornings can be hectic, so please plan ahead so that you are at Race HQ at the start time for your assignment. Your promptness helps everything run smoothly and we appreciate it more than you know!
👕 What to Wear
Volunteer shifts typically start early in the morning and often can be chilly, but conditions can change significantly as the day goes on. Here are a few tips to keep you comfortable:
- Dress in layers. Mornings can be cool or even cold, but it will likely warm up as the day progresses. Layers you can remove and stow are your best friend.
- Check the weather forecast. If rain is in the forecast, bring a rain jacket or waterproof outer layer. If it's going to be cold, pack an extra layer just in case.
- Sun protection matters. Sunglasses, a hat or visor, and sunscreen are strongly recommended - especially if you'll be stationed on an exposed part of the course.
🎒 What to Bring
- Your cell phone - this one is important! You'll need it to stay in contact with your captain and coordinator. Please make sure it is fully charged before you arrive.
- Water bottle. Stay hydrated! We'll do our best to keep you taken care of, but having your own water is always a smart move.
- Snacks. We may have food and snacks available for volunteers, but if you have specific preferences or dietary needs, bring something you know you'll enjoy. You don't want to be hungry mid-shift!
- A portable/backup charger. Race days are long and phones are useful all day. A backup battery can save the day if your phone runs low.
🗺 Know the Course & Schedule
We encourage all volunteers to review the race schedule, course maps and FAQ before race day. Athletes frequently ask questions like "How much farther to the finish?" or "Where is the next aid station?" Being able to point them in the right direction - even just with general knowledge - makes a huge impression and means the world to an athlete who's working hard out there.
Even a quick read-through will have you feeling confident and prepared!
